Cairo University was established in December 21, 1908, and includes a School of Law and a School of Medicine. It was one of it's first in Africa and Middle east and since then has be expanded extensively. The first president of Cairo University, was Professor Ahmed Lutfi el-Sayed.

According to the 2008 Webometrics World Universities rankings, Cairo University is ranked 2nd in Egypt and 10th in Africa.
